What are flash loans and how can they be used in DeFi?

Been doing some reading up on DeFi and came across this term, "Flash Loans". Kinda confusing, isn't it? If anyone's got the time and the knowledge, could you break it down for me? Good points all around. But, have we considered how the inherent volatility of certain cryptocurrencies might affect the reliability of flash loans in the DeFi sector? As in, may sudden price swings compromise the flash loan concept as a whole? Just some food for thought.
