What is a Block?

A block is a vital term in the world of cryptocurrencies and blockchain. In simple terms, a block can be defined as a group of transactions collected into a single, compact set of data. It is one of the fundamental components of the blockchain technology, which forms the underlying infrastructure of cryptocurrencies.

Fundamental Role of a Block in Blockchain

The block plays a crucial role in the blockchain system. Every transaction that occurs in a cryptocurrency network, like Bitcoin or Ethereum, is recorded in a block. After a block is completed with a certain number of transactions, it undergoes a process known as mining. That's when it gets appended to the blockchain.

Blocks and Mining

Mining is the process that actually validates and verifies the transactions contained in a block. This process entails complex mathematical algorithms, and the computers attempting to solve these equations are referred to as miners. Once a miner succeeds in solving the equations, the block is considered as 'mined'. The mined block then gets attached to the pre-existing blockchain, ensuring that all the transactions within are authenticated and immutable.

These include the hash of the block, the hash of the prior block (also known as Parent Hash), the block number (or Height), and the confirmed transactions.
